LECTURE AS AN APPROACH TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SELF-REPORTED PRACTICE REGARDING EAR INFECTION AMONG MOTHERS WITH DAY-CARE STUDENT IN POBLACION, LAKEWOOD ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR

This study was conducted to determine the effect of lecture on knowledge and self-reported practice among mothers with day-care student regarding ear infection in Poblacion, Lakewood Zamboanga del Sur. Pre and post interventional research design was utilized in the study. The respondents of the study are mothers with day-care students who are currently enrolled. Interviewer-assisted questionnaires administered during the pre- and post-interventions were utilized to gather data on knowledge and self-reported practice. Data processing and analysis were done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Program and Stata. Paired T-test was used for comparison of the total mean knowledge scores between pretest, post-test 1 and post- test 2. Mcnemar test was used to determine the significant difference of each item in the self-reported practice questionnaire from pre-test to post-test. The mean knowledge score was 12.47 before the intervention and increased to 16.19 in post-test 1 then decreased to 15.66 in post-test 2. The intervention, therefore, significantly increased the knowledge on pediatric ear infection among the respondents but there was significant decay of knowledge after 1 month. Most of the self-reported practice improved and were statistically significant. Among these were on avoidance on cleaning the child’s ears with the use of cotton buds; also removing ear discharge, water and ear wax with cotton buds and consultation to RHU when the child experience ear pain or ear discharge. The self-reported practices on checking the child’s ear for ear discharge, elicit tragal pain whenever the child have flu or colds showed improvements but were not statistical significance. The other 2 self -reported practices were on checking the child’s ear for ear discharge and elicit tragal pain whenever they have flu or colds it decreased but showed no statistical significance. This study concludes that health education in the form of lecture is an effective form of intervention in improving the knowledge and self-reported practices on paediatric ear infection among mothers with day-care student in Barangay Poblacion, Municipal of Lakewood, Zamboanga del Sur province.
