The benefits of exclusive breastfeeding is well established however, current rates are still low. This study aimed to determine the individual counseling in rates of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Municipality of Tampilisan and Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte. Seventy two (72) primiparous mothers were included in the study and received three individual counseling visits by trained BHWs. Exclusive breastfeeding rate was monitored until the child reached 6 months of age. Results showed that prior to intervention, 56 (78%) mothers were exclusively breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding rates at 6 months after intervention was not significantly increased with 57 (79%) mothers breastfeeding exclusively. Improper feeding practices that kept from achieving exclusive breastfeeding were identified as giving of formula (72%), addition of plain water (11%), initiation of complementary feeding (11%), and giving of vitamins (6%). Four most common reasons for the introduction of formula/mixed feeding was also recorded. Resumption of work/school showed to be the frequent reason for formula use with 41%, followed by milk insufficiency (35%), mother’s desire and breastfeeding is time consuming with 12% respectively. Failure of individual counseling to achieve application of recommended practices to improve breastfeeding outcomes show that other factors must be considered to successfully overcome improper feeding practices and barriers to exclusive breastfeeding.
