Author: Manzur, Aisha A.
Date: July 2018

This study is a pre and post intervention study determining the effect of lecture in improving the biosecurity knowledge and practices among poultry handlers in a layer poultry farm in Barangay New Barili, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte. Total Count sampling was utilized to recruit the 12 respondents for this study. The baseline knowledge was evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire prior to the intervention. Two post-tests were given using the same questionnaire; immediately and one month after the intervention. Actual practices, on the other hand, were evaluated using a checklist prior to the intervention. Two post-tests were also given using the same checklist, four and eight weeks after the intervention. ANOVA for repeated measures was used to determine improvement in knowledge and retention. The findings showed a significant increase in mean knowledge score from the pre-intervention score (12.82) to the post-intervention 1 score (16.27) with a P-value of 0.000. A slight decrease was noted in the mean score at post-intervention 2 (15.82) with a P-value of 0.000. As for the practices, only 5 out of 12 recommended biosecurity practices were being done prior to the intervention, and only one had improved after the intervention. This study concludes that lecture was effective in improving the knowledge of the workers in the layer poultry farm in Barangay New Barili, Tamplisan, Zamboanga del Norte. However, it was not effective in increasing the overall biosecurity practices, as there was improvement in only one biosecurity practice. Some of the identified reasons for no improvement of the other practices include financial and behavioral constraints.
