BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) TRAINING THROUGH SONG AND INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF LAKEWOOD, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR
Author: Sinsuan, Robert T.
Date: July 2018

The study was conducted to determine the effect of Basic Life Support (BLS) training through song and instructional video on the knowledge and skills of high school students. The objectives of the study are to determine the effect of the intervention on both knowledge and skills before and after the intervention. An instructional Video was created with an instructor teaching the concepts of BLS in the vernacular. A Visayan BLS song was composed featuring the concepts taught in the video. The song was taught and played four (4) times after the 20-minute instructional video was shown. BLS trained facilitators were present to answer questions and clarifications at 5 minute intervals in between the video. Baseline knowledge was assessed through a 10-item questionnaire, which was also used at all three (3) post-intervention examinations. Skills on BLS were assessed by a Skills checklist adopted from the American Heart Association. Different skills were assessed individually namely, BLS sequence, high quality CPR, and the use of AED. Data were gathered and analysed and presented in a frequency table. Results showed a significant increase in the number of students who passed the written examinations from 2.4% to 75%, 84%, and 70% at the first, second, and third post-evaluations repectively. Moreover, at least 80% of the students passed all the BLS skills stations in all three post-evaluations. This result is attributed to the introduction of BLS through the use of a CPR Song and an instructional video where the spoken dialect is in the vernacular.
