A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LECTURES VS. TEXT MESSAGING ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE TOWARD STI AND HIVAMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS

The purpose of this interventional study is to evaluate the effect of lectures and text messaging on the knowledge and attitude of college students regarding sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV in Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte and Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. The study included 172 respondents, with 86 respondents for each interventional group. The study utilized the module based on WHO and UNESCO on STI/HIV and AIDS both for the lecture and the text messaging groups. Results revealed significant increase in mean scores from pre-test (11.52) to post-test 2 (13.58) of the lecture group (p=0.000). Attitude mean scores of the lecture group also showed a significant increase from pre-test of 9.52 to post-test 2 of 11.73 (p=0.000). The text messaging group result also showed an increase in mean scores. Knowledge mean scores of the text messaging group increased significantly from a pre-test score of 10.21 to a post-test 2 score of 13.50(p=0.000). Attitude mean scores of the text messaging group also showed significantly increased result from 9.17 to 11.35 (p=0.000). This study was able to describe and determine that both lectures and text messaging can increase the knowledge and improve the attitude of college students towards STIs and HIV However, it was undetermined which intervention is more effective than the other.
