The primary goal of the study was to determine the level of competency of the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) volunteers of Zamboanga City in responding to vehicular accidents (VA) using the Miller’s triangle of competency as a model. This was a cross sectional study that involved the EMT-B volunteers of Zamboanga City from two different institutions: Red Cross Zamboanga (RC), and City Health Office-Southwestern Action for Emergency (CHO-SAFE). A total count was utilized for this study. To assess the level of competency following Miller’s level 1-4, a questionnaire was used to determine the competency for level 1 (knows), a workbook scenario was utilized for level 2 (knows how), a simulated demonstration using NHTSA checklist was used for level 3 (shows how) and direct observation was carried out for level 4 (does). In a ladderized step up fashion, results showed that among the 47 EMT-B participants who started at level 1, 27 were found to exhibit level 1 competency. Among the 27 EMT-B participants who reached level 2, 23 exhibited to have level 2 competency. Among the 23 EMT-B participants who reached level 3, 19 participants exhibited level 3 competency. Finally, among the 19 EMT participants who reached level 4, 3 were dropped out while only 16 participants were directly observed of which all passed level 4. This study showed that the EMT-B volunteers of Zamboanga City vary in the level of their competency. As the measure of the level of competency increases, the number of EMT-B participants stepping further in the Miller’s triangle became fewer. However, in the level 4 competency, no one failed among those who were observed. This suggests that the EMT-B volunteers inZamboanga City perform competently in the real setting in the context of responding to vehicular accidents.
