THE IMPACT OF WATER DISINFECTION PROMOTION IN THE ACCEPTABILITY OF SMALL BIOSAND FILTER AND SOLAR DISINFECTION AS DRNKING WATER PURIFICATION METHOD AMONG HOUSEHOLDS IN BARANGAY MOLOS, TAMPLILISAN ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE

This pre and post intervention study determined the impact of Water Disinfection Promotion on the utilization of Small Biosand Filter and Solar Disinfection among households in Barangay Molos, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte. The promotion was done through health education in a form of lecture and demonstration. Respondents were taught on the importance of safe and clean drinking water, they werte provided with informative pamphlets and posters. The demonstration on the construction of Small Biosand filter and proper application of Solar Disinfection was done 3 days after the lecture. 131 respondents were recruited through convenience sampling. The baseline knowledge of the respondents regarding water purification was assessed using a self-administered questionnaire prior to the intervention. Actual practices on drinking water purification methods were assessed using a evaluation checklist. Frequency and Percentage were used to compare pre and post intervention practice and acceptability. Results showed significant improvement in utilizing acceptable drinking water purification practices to 82.37%. The Acceptability of the Small Biosand Filter and Solar Disinfection were 61.06% one month post intervention and 61.83% two (2) months post intervention. Based on the results, Water Disinfection promotion is an effective form of intervention in improving the practices and increasing the acceptability of Small Biosand Filter and Solar disinfection among households in Barangay Molos, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte.
