PREVALENCE OF INTERNET ADDICTION AND RISKY BEHAVIOR AMONG JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SELECTED SCHOOLS IN URBAN ZAMBOANGA CITY

This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. It aimed to determine the prevalence of internet addiction and risky behaviors among Junior and Senior High School students Also it aimed to determine the risky behaviors with varying levels of internet addiction. Internet addiction and risky behavior are the variables under study and the data was collected from 1598 students in urban Zamboanga city, Philippines, Junior and Senior High School, aged 12-19years old through survey distributed in classes utilizing a multi stage sampling design. The Internet addiction test was used to measure internet addiction and Perkin’s adolescent risk screen to assess risky behavior. There were a total of 640 males and 958 females. The prevalence of mild internet addiction is 36.8%, moderate 32.8% and severe 2.8%. Prevalence of moderate alcohol use is 6.6%, 5.3% for moderate tobacco use, 4.9% for moderate violence, 2.1% for moderate sexual activity, and 0.8% for moderate drug use. For severe alcohol use was 2.2%, severe tobacco use 1.9%, drug use 0.4%, violence 1.9%, and sexual activity 3.7%. The results show the vulnerability of adolescents to internet. Furthermore, result demonstrates that adolescents are highly exposed to different risky behaviors. Future research must be done to determine the risk factors associated with internet addiction and risky behavior at the same time discern those that have protective factors.
