SEXUAL BEHAVIORS AMONG GRADE 11 SENIOR HIGH SCHOLL STUDENTS IN SELECTED SCHOOLS OF ZAMBOANGA CITY

The study aimed to determine the sexual behaviors of grade 11 senior high school students in selected high schools in Zamboanga City. This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized multistage sampling with 1,089 respondents from eight public and private schools. The study revealed that 59.8% of students have engaged in flirting while 71.8% of respondents have experienced being in romantic relationships. Among physical intimacies, 66.8% have experienced kissing a partner; 39.5% have experienced mutual necking; 36.6% have experienced petting or touching; 15% have experienced doing oral sex and 26.6% have experienced kissing or petting in public. Engaging in same sex relationships by adolescents is at 7.1%. More than half (51.2%) of the respondents have experienced premarital sex and among those who experienced sexual intercourse, 87.3% were noted to have engaged in unprotected sex. Majority (68%) of the students experienced watching pornography and 47.7% of students reported that they have done masturbation. Among high-risk sexual behaviors, 12.2% of students have engaged in non-romantic sex and 12.8% have experienced “one-night stand’ or casual sex. A number (6.2%) of students have experienced paying for sex. Lastly, 5% of the students have experienced doing favors or getting material things through sex. In the sexual risk scale, only 6% or 65 of the respondents were categorized under high-sexual risk. In conclusion, sexual behaviors among grade 11 senior high school students in some schools in Zamboanga City were more prominent as compared to data gathered from previous studies in the Philippines.
