PREVALENCE OF SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO ARE SMARTPHONE USERS OF ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA UNIVERSITY, ZAMBOANGA CITY

This cross-sectional study determined the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety, and depression, and smartphone addiction risk among college students who are smartphone users in Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The study included 574 college students officially enrolled for the summer class of SY 2017-2018. Self-reported screening questionnaires were used, specifically, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Smartphone Addiction Scale. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, and percentage distribution were utilized. The overall prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression were 412 (72%) and 302 (53%), respectively. Using Beck Anxiety Inventory, the classification for symptoms of anxiety were as follows: 138 (24.04%) college students had ‘mild anxiety’, 132 (23%) had ‘moderate anxiety’ and 142 (24.74%) had ‘severe anxiety’. Meanwhile, using Beck Depression Inventory the classification for symptoms of depression were as follows: 69 (12.02%) with borderline clinical depression, 138 (24.04%) with moderate depression, 72 (12.54%) with severe depression and 23 (4.01%) extreme depression. Utilizing the Smartphone addiction Scale, 293 (51%) among respondents are high risk for smartphone addiction. Among those with symptoms of anxiety, 241 (58.50%) are high risk for smartphone addiction, and 192 (63.58%) among those with symptoms of depression. The main purpose for using a smartphone on the majority of those with symptoms of anxiety and depression is social media (anxiety- 29.23%, depression- 30.79%).
