This cross sectional descriptive study aimed to describe the experiences of mothers on and determine the satisfaction of mothers with the service delivery on immunization of children 0-5 years old in selected barangay health centers (BHC) in Zamboanga City.
The study was conducted in three randomly selected areas namely Guiwan BHC, Putik BHC and Sta. Catalina BHC. Three hundred ninety six mothers were randomly selected and interviewed. Majority (87.6%) of respondents reported that vaccines were always available at BHC; 90.7% had experience fair treatment from health care providers; 83.1% did not wait for prolonged time; 86.9% expressed they had comfortable waiting place; 80.1% were given explanation about the importance of immunization; 84.8% told they were given health education about the side effects of immunization; 91.4% were instructed on the next dose of vaccines; 85.1% of their children were immunized on scheduled dates; and 88.1% confirmed that a house-to-house visit was conducted in their barangay. However, some areas needed improvement. In two (2) BHCs, close to a fourth of the mothers said they could not remember that they were given health education about the importance of immunization. In another BHC, close to a fourth of the respondents stated that they waited for prolonged time and their children were not immunized on scheduled date due to unavailability of vaccines. On the other hand, majority (87.3%) of participants were satisfied with EPI service provision; 85.6% were satisfied with BHC personnel service; and 81.1% were satisfied with BHC facilities. In terms of the respondents’ level of satisfaction in service provision, waiting time had the lowest score with a mean of 2.94. In the area of personnel services, explanation of personnel on the treatment process to clients was rated lowest with 2.81. Under BHC facilities, respondents rated proper ventilation the lowest with 2.43 mean score. Overall, the selected BHC was not able to meet all the 90% expectations in terms of experiences of mothers regarding service delivery on immunization of children based from Sentrong Sigla Movement Quality Standard List (SSM-QSL). However, mothers were generally satisfied with the service delivery on immunization of their children based from the data shown. Hence, researcher recommends that the selected BHC should start implementing changes especially on items that obtained low score in the questionnaire in order to meet all the client’s needs such as mentioned above. Future immunization strategies may be productive if they build on the results reported in the study.
