Author: Diansuy, Geode Allan V.
Date: July 2019

In the Philippines, the Expanded Program on Immunization was established to guarantee that children will have access to recommended childhood vaccines. Vaccination services were offered by both government and private health sectors. The contribution of immunizations from the private health sector, however remains unaccounted for due to issues on access and documentation of records. Therefore, the stand alone DOH report may not give a true picture of the overall immunization rate of children in the city. Thus, this mixed quantitative-qualitative study was undertaken to explore the vaccines given in the private sector and determine the facilitating and hindering factors in obtaining childhood immunization from the private health care providers in Zamboanga City. Participants (n=37) of this study were pediatricians with established pediatric practices and their respective clinic assistants. A survey and 3-open ended guide questionnaire was administered among the respondents using a purposive sampling design. Interview among was concluded when data saturation had been reached. The data gathered was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and thematic analysis approach. Fifteen (15) common vaccines provided in the private sector were identified. Facilitating factors identified were: Utilization of Electronic Medical Records, Efficient record keeping, and having an Exclusive immunization logbook. In contrast, the unorganized paper-based record system, increased workload among clinic assists, facility’s poor access to internet connection, lack of legislation to report data and the common use of recording immunization in the baby’s book were the major hindering factors identified. This study recommended a cohort study to track vaccination of all children born in private hospitals, having a standardized collection and electronic documentation of clinic’s immunization data, provision of trainings of efficient methods on record management and formation of legislation mandating all private clinics to submit accurate FIC data quarterly
