PREVALENCE OF SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND SUICIDAL IDEATIONS OF CYBERBULLIED ADOLESCENTS IN SELECTED PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN ZAMBOANGA CITY

The adolescent period is an important developmental milestone that every person has to undergo. However, adolescents are prone to have problems from negative effects of social interactions. Cyberbullying is a phenomenon that involves the use of devices and social media platforms to hurt or harm someone. When many adolescents were now using these technologies for their social needs in this modern era, they have become exposed to risks of cyberbullying. Mental health illnesses like symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations are experiences that a cyberbullied person experiences. This study determined the prevalence of the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations of cyberbullied adolescents in selected public schools of Zamboanga City. It included 406 students grades 7 to 12 with ages 10 to 19 from Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School, Southcom National High School, and Zamboanga National High School West in Zamboanga City utilizing a quantitative cross-sectional study with multistage sampling. A tool called Cybervictimization questionnaire (CYVIC) was used. Results showed 346 to be cyberbullied and exposed to the 4 types of Cybervictimization. One hundred ninety-six (57%) were females while 150 (43%) were males, 318 of 346 were cyberbullied by written verbal means which is the most common in this study. For mental health, depression was determined using Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale revised (CESD-R10), Anxiety using Speilgerger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI: Y-6), and suicidal ideations with the Columbia-Suicide severity rating scale (CSSRS). There were 169 (49%) cyberbullied adolescents who have symptoms of having depression. 96 (49%) of those depressed among the female population. There were 267 (77%) who were having symptoms of anxiety. One hundred forty-seven (75%) were females with anxiety among the female population. Lastly for suicidal ideations, 171 (49%) had suicidal ideations. 107 (55%) were females. Chi-square test showed no significant difference of the prevalence of depression and anxiety among biological sexes. However, suicidal ideation was found to be significantly higher among females in this particular sampling population.
