PERCEIVED QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS OF ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA UNIVERSITY

This cross-sectional study determined the perceived quality of life of the undergraduate and graduate students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University in terms of Physical Health, Psychological Well-being, Social Relationships and Environment. A total of 534 respondents participated in the said study selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-short version (WHOQOL-BREF) was used to assess the quality of life. The respondents included in this study are bona fide students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University from different levels of undergraduate and graduate schools.. The study was conducted in the beginning of the first semester of the academic school year calendar of 2019-2020. The study showed that majority of the college students in Ateneo de Zamboanga University have a moderate to good perceived quality of life. The mean scores of QOL were highest in the social relationships domain, followed by environment domain, both falling under the category of good quality of life (QOL).. Physical domain and psychological well-being domains came third and fourth falling under the category of moderate quality of life. Only on physical and social relations domain do undergraduate and graduate students’ perceived quality of life scores are statistically different F(1,532) = 61.87, eta squared = .104 and F(1, 532) = 11.997, eta squared = .022. No statistical differences were noted for psychological well-being and environment domains. The graduate students perceived physical domain scores are higher (mean = 15.88, sd = 1.14) compared to the undergraduate students (mean = 14.67, sd = 1.64). On the other hand, it is the undergraduate students who scored higher in the perceived QOL in domains of level of social relations (mean = 15.35, sd = 1.73) compared to the graduate students (mean = 14.71, sd = 2.19). Only on physical and social relations domain do undergraduate and graduate students’ perceived quality of life scores are statistically different F(1,532) = 61.87, eta squared = .104 and F(1, 532) = 11.997, eta squared = .022. No statistical differences were noted for psychological well-being and environment domain. Among all the socio-demographic data, only the current educational course showed large effect size to the four domains of quality of life. It has a ETA (η) of 0.61 (η2 of 0.37) to physical domain; ETA (η) of 0.43 (η2 of 0.18) to psychological well-being domain; ETA (η) of 0.54 (η2 of 0.29) to social relations domain; and ETA (η) of 0.67 (η2 of 0.44) to environment domain. Lastly, this study revealed that age, sex, marital status, ethnicity, religion, years of residency in Zamboanga City, living arrangement, migration profile and the scholarship status showed small effect size to the four domains of the perceived quality of life among college students in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
