THE PREVALENCE OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AMONG MALE PERSONS DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY (PDL) IN THE ZAMBOANGA CITY JAIL
Author: Sinsuan, Robert T.
Date: July 2019

The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of sexual violence among Male Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in the Zamboanga City Jail. A total of 353 male inmates from different cell blocks participated in the study. The study utilized a cross-sectional descriptive research design. Questionnaires were utilized in both phases and administered by the researcher. Of the 353 respondents, 7 (1.98%) admitted to experiencing sexual violence while in detention inside the Zamboanga City Jail. This rate however does not account for multiple victimizations that occur. The forms of sexual violence differs from the severe anal form to genital fondling, done simultaneously or in different times by either a single or multiple individuals. The effects of sexual violence vary and may be related to the form of violence done. Moreover, a majority (6/7) of the victims are homosexuals who are newly incarcerated (within the first year). Offenders are usually male inmates who have stayed longer than the victims.
