COMPASSION SATISFACTION, COMPASSION FATIGUE, AND BURNOUT AMONG MEDICAL HEALTHCARE WORKERS ASSIGNED IN COVID-19 WARDS IN VARIOUS HOSPITALS IN ZAMBOANGA CITY
Author: Cabanlit, Pillar del Cielo R.
Date: July 2021

With the high-pressure and high-risk setting brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the professional quality of life (ProQOL) of the healthcare workers (HCWs) may be impaired. This cross-sectional analytical study sought to determine the prevalence of compassion satisfaction (CS), compassion fatigue (CF), and burnout (BO) among the medical HCWs (nurses, nurse attendants, and physicians) assigned in the COVID-19 wards of four (4) selected hospitals in Zamboanga City, and to assess the relationship between these ProQOL elements. The ProQOL-5 questionnaire developed by Stamm (2010) was utilized to achieve the objectives. A total of 162 participants were recruited through convenience sampling, and data was gathered either via online platform or personal survey. All data were encoded in STATA SE 12 and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that most of respondents experienced moderate (60.94 percent) to high (38.27 percent) levels of CS. Majority felt moderate (62.96% percent to low (35.80 percent) levels of CF, and moderate (66.67 percent) to low (32.72 percent) levels of BO. The mean scores were 39.64 ± 5.80 for CS, 24.60 ± 4.93 for BO, and 24.73 ± 5.93 for CF—all indicating moderate levels. Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that CS was weakly negatively correlated with BO with a Spearman’s rho (ρ) of -0. 3219 and a significant p-value of 0.000. BO, on the other hand, was moderately positively correlated with CF with a ρ of 0.5117 and a significant p-value of 0.000. No relationship existed, however, between CS and CF. This study recommends further investigation of the ProQOL of the HCWs after the pandemic, and for institutions to offer self-care programs among HCWs to either maintain or improve their ProQOL.
