Author: Munabirul, Fatima Shereen S.
Date: July 2021

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental health among the frontline essential workers in the supply chain group has been overlooked, hampered in part by the mainstream health care frontline workers. Hence, this cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to determine the level of mental well-being and resilience, as well as prevalence of burnout symptoms in selected establishments such as grocery stores, convenience store and pharmacy. Total count was utilized, and a response rate of 83% (330/399) was achieved from five various establishments at Zamboanga City, Philippines. Data were collected using three (3) structured self‐report scales, including the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS), Single-Item Burnout Measure (SIBM), and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The study showed that more than half, 50.9% (168/330) of the frontline essential workers had expressed a normal level of mental well-being, and only 3.94% (13) had low level of mental well-being. Meanwhile, approximately 30% of the frontline essential workers had experienced symptoms of burnout. Further, 22.4% (77/330) of the essential workers had low level of resilience, with 77% (255/330) of the essential workers had average level of resilience. Hence, these findings can serve as baseline data for the policy makers or establishment administration to improve its existing strategies, better yet formulate new ones, that would strengthen this workforce’s mental well-being and resilience, and prevent burnout. Ultimately, efforts to promote positive mental health will benefit the individuals, their profession, the public, and the society, as a whole.
