Author: John Benedict M. Alvia
Date: May 2012

School bullying perhaps is not a new phenomenon. It could have been existing long ago but has been focused by media lately because of its increasing prevalence and intensity. While much has been studied in urban setting, little is known about its prevalence in rural setting. Anecdotal incidents have likewise been increasingly reported in rural settings. This pre-post interventional research was conducted to assess and compare the effect of a lecture regarding bullying on the knowledge of Grade four, five and six students of Lakewood Central Elementary School (LCES). Total count was utilized as the sampling method which yielded 249 respondents. The knowledge of the respondents was assessed through the use of a 20-item self-administered questionnaire. Passing score was set at 10. Two post-intervention assessments were conducted; one immediately after the intervention and the other two weeks after the intervention. ANOVA for repeated measures was used to determine the enhancement and retention of knowledge. Results revealed that there was a significant difference (P-0.000) in the knowledge of the respondents between pre-test and post-intervention 1 and between pre-test and post-intervention 2 (P-0.000). Between post-intervention 1 and post-intervention 2, there was no significant difference noted (P-1.000) which implied that there was retention of knowledge even after two weeks. Despite the increase in knowledge, the mean knowledge scores remained below the passing score for both post-intervention 1 and post-intervention 2. However, results also showed that there was a marked increase in the passing rate of the respondents from a 7.2% in the pre-test to 24.9 in the post-intervention 2. This study has concluded that lecture on bullying was effective in improving the knowledge of the respondents though minimally. A review of the questionnaire has to be done to address the issue why only 7.2% of the respondents passed the knowledge test. The prevalence of bullying likewise need to be established.
