It’s been 3 decades now since the intervention of the Oral Rehydration Solution. While millions of children worldwide have been saved from the insult of diarrhea through Oresol several version of this solution has been introduced in the market. Mola et al from Bangladesh have shown unequivocally that home cereal based ORESOL still out rival the WHO formulation not only in efficacy but more importantly their availability especially at the community level. In the final analysis it is still the issue of taste acceptability that will matter if children were to drink it to be saved from dehydration and electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhea. This study aimed to determine if home-made oral rehydration solutions and commercial oral rehydration solutions will be acceptable as initial home management by the patients with acute gastroenteritis with mild to moderate dehydration in the Municipality of Lakewood Zamboanga del Sur. With the use of a modified 3-point Hedonic scale, an acceptability tests for taste were done to 86 patients. The solutions were also tested as to their affordability, availability of ingredients, ability to make the solution and utilization. The monitoring of the cases and utilization of the rehydration solution lasted for five months. One (1) day seminar was conducted by the researcher on 5 different dates on different puroks, which included lectures and demonstrations for proper preparation of the oral dehydration solutions. Each dates of seminar only accommodated 3-4 puroks of Poblacion Lakewood for a more conducive learning. Patients from other Barangays were lectured on the spot upon their consultation. This study concluded that the homemade oral rehydration solutions introduced by the researchers was acceptable by patients with acute gastroenteritis in Lakewood Zamboanga del Sur, but the commercial oral rehydration solution was preferred by most patients because of its palatability and convenience in preparing.
