Date: May 2011

High infant and maternal mortality occur around perinatal birthing. Because of this, most health intervention strategies are focused in supporting mothers about to give birth and managing immediate and continued breastfeeding. Unfortunately most mothers especially early age pregnancy enter this life period unprepared. They have poor knowledge and defective attitude and wrong practices on child birthing. This research study aimed to determine the effect of mother’s counseling on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of pregnant women in regards to prenatal care in Barangay Poblacion Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay. The study used a pre-post interventional design. The Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of the respondents were determined through a self-administered questionnaire before intervention and one and two months after intervention. An average of 1 hour of individual counseling was conducted at the respondent's house for the intervention. A total of 60 respondents following the inclusion criteria were selected. A maximum score of 20 was given for the knowledge. The result showed a significant increase in the knowledge mean score from 9.33 before intervention to 11.45 to 14.33 one and two months after the intervention, respectively. The results also showed significant improvement on the attitude. A maximum score of 80 was also given for the Attitude. Result showed the Attitude mean score before intervention was 56.61 and increased to 61.68 and 66.05 one month and two months post counseling, respectively. Furthermore, 59(98.33%) of the respondents availed prenatal care at the health center after the intervention. Ten (10) respondents delivered while the study was ongoing and 100% of these exclusively breastfed their baby until the study ended. Therefore, mother s counseling regarding prenatal care was effective in increasing the knowledge, attitude and practices of pregnant women who do not go for prenatal care and who are having irregular prenatal visits.
