A COMPARATIVE STUDY: THE EFFECT OF ACTUAL DEMONSTRATION WITH CORRECTIVE FEEDBACK VERSUS REPETITIVE VIDEO ON BREAST SELF EXAMINATION SKILLS OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS IN DIPLAHAN ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY PROVINCE
Author: CRYSTAL JOY M. BOLODO
Date: April 2014

This is a quasi-experimental study that determines the effect of actual demonstration with corrective feedback versus repetitive video on enhancing the skills of barangay health workers in Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay. Initially, there were 103 respondents in the study but since many respondents failed to take the post valuation only a total of 63 respondents finished the study with 31 respondents under the corrective feedback group while the 32 respondents under the video group. The study used a checklist to determine the skills of the BHW on the 12 steps of breast self examination. On the corrective feedback group, the researcher reviewed the steps that the respondents failed to perform. Corrective feedback was done after the post evaluation 1, 2 and 3. On the other hand, on the video group, video was presented twice. The same video was presented once a month, 2 months and 3 months after. Post evaluation was done immediately, a month, 2 months and 3 months after. Using McNemar’s test, it shows that there was a significant increase in the post intervention 1 under the corrective feedback group but has no significant difference on post intervention 2, 3 and 4. Under the video group, there was no significant increase in post evaluation 1 but it significantly increased in post intervention 2. In post evaluation 3 and 4 there was no significant difference Mann-Whitney U Test was used to compare the two groups. In the first evaluation there was a significant difference between the corrective feedback and video group with a p-value of 0.021. It means that corrective feedback was more effective than the video group. However, during the post evaluation 2, it shows that there is no significant difference between the two groups with a p-value of 0.911. In post evaluation 3, there is no significant difference with a p-value of 0.378. During the last post evaluation, there is no significant difference with a p-value of 0.651. Therefore, both approaches are equally effective in enhancing the skills of the barangay health workers. If we have to consider time, cost and effort that were put into the two methods. Corrective feedback will be more advantageous as it requires less cost and effort although more time consuming than the video group. Result also shows an early improvement of BSE skills among BHW in corrective feedback.
