This study was done to determine the effect of Bantay Rabies sa Barangay (BRB)
in the improvement of knowledge and practices on Rabies and Responsible Pet
Ownership among the residents of Barangay Pilar, Municipality of Diplahan,
Zamboanga Sibugay Province. Total count sampling was used to gather respondents and
survey with questionnaire were administered in vernacular before and after the
intervention. Programs of the BRB which includes lecture, leaflet distribution, tarpaulin
posters, dog registration and vaccination and creation of a Barangay Ordinance was
utilized as intervention in order to promote Responsible Pet Ownership. Paired t-test was
used to analyze the results for the knowledge test while unpaired t-test was used for the
practices. Results revealed a significant increase in the mean scores on the knowledge on
Rabies and Responsible Pet Ownership from 2.51 to 4.46 with p-value of 0.000 and from
1.63 to 2.99 with p-value of 0.000 respectively. Practices on Responsible Pet Ownership
also showed improvements from 7 (4.3%) registered dogs with a mean score of 0.04 to
171 (100%) registered dogs with a mean score of 1.00, both have p-value of 0.000 and
from 3 (1.8%) vaccinated dogs with a mean score of 0.02 to125 (88%) vaccinated dogs
with a mean score of 0.88 in post-intervention and both have a p-value of 0.000. In
conclusion, BRB has an effect on the knowledge and practices on Rabies and Responsible
Pet Ownership among the residents of Barangay Pilar, Municipality of Diplahan,
Zamboanga Sibugay Province.
