This study aimed to determine the effect of health education on knowledge and
attitude of high school students regarding substance abuse. A total of 159 respondents
were included in the study. The lecture group (N=82) was taken from Diplahan National
High School while the pamphlet group (N=77) was taken from Malangas National High
School. Both are high schools in Zamboanga Sibugay Province. Post intervention
assessments were done 1 week and 2 months after the intervention. In the pre-intervention, the lecture group (DNHS) had a mean score of 10.81. The pamphlet group
(MNHS) had a mean score of 10.88. In post intervention 1, the lecture group (DNHS)
and the pamphlet group (MNHS) had a mean score of 11.63 and 11.81 respectively. In
post intervention 2, the lecture group (DNHS) and the pamphlet group (MNHS) had a
mean score of 12.23 and 12.48 respectively. Analysis of means scores of the lecture
group (DNHS) by Paired T-test showed that the increase from pre-intervention and post
1 was significant with a p-value of 0.000. The increase from post intervention 1 and post
intervention 2 had a p-value of 0.000. Analysis of means scores of the pamphlet group
(MNHS) by Paired T-test showed that the increase from pre-intervention and post 1 was
significant with a p-value of 0.000. The increase from post intervention 1 and post
intervention 2 had a p-value of 0.000. The results showed that the knowledge mean
scores of both groups significantly increased, indicating that both lecture and pamphlet
are effective in increasing the knowledge of the high school students on
methamphetamine. However, when the knowledge scores of both groups were compared
using individual T-test, there was no significant difference. In terms of attitude, both
groups did not show improvement.
