Author: FAHAD U. SUSULAN
Date: April 2014

This is a pre and post interventional study aimed to assess the effect of pamphlet versus poster as health education intervention on the actual practices of farmers on the use of pesticides in Barangays Songcuya and Guinoman, Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay Province. Respondents of this study were rice farmers who were active members of Farmer’s Association. Two groups participated in the study. The poster group consists of 44 respondents from Barangay Guinoman while pamphlet group consists of 46 respondents from Barangay Songcuya. A checklist was used to evaluate the actual practices of the respondents before and after the intervention. For the actual practices, McNemar’s test was used in each group and chi square for comparison between groups. Data on actual practices are categorized into 3: proper storage and disposal of pesticides, safety measures on pesticide use, and don’ts in pesticide application. In proper storage and disposal of pesticides, there was a significant difference in the items “Having a separate utensil for mixing pesticide” and “does not store pesticide under the tree,” which means that before the intervention, poster group have better correct practices than pamphlet group in having a separate utensil for mixing pesticide. In the item “does not store pesticide under the tree,” pamphlet group has better correct practices before the intervention. There was also a significant increase in the correct practices in post 1 in the item “stores pesticides away from food and feeds” in both groups. In comparison between groups, pamphlet and poster were equally effective in improving the actual practices in items which are comparable. Furthermore, there were statistical increases favouring one group and the other, it still proved that both groups have effectively improve the actual practices in proper storage and disposal of pesticides, safety measures on pesticide use and don’ts during pesticide application. The researcher recommends that monthly assessment and evaluation of actual practices of respondents be conducted to determine weak points in the intervention.
