The Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) has a 23-year history of fulfilling
its mission on promoting health equity through its innovative community-engaged medical education. This is
achieved by deploying its students to underserved communities. Close to 50% of the four year medical training pro-gram is engaged in the community, while the entire 4th-year level is spent implementing a comprehensive Commu-nity Health Plan (CHP).
During these immersions, projects are conceived and developed right from their first year entry level of
their medical training. These intervention projects are based on actual health needs of the community, and are sub-sequently developed, implemented, managed and evaluated within their 4-year of stay. All of these steps is done in
collaboration with the community.
This community setting has likewise become the laboratory platform for student formation. While the stu-dents use the intersectoral approach to provide a forum for community empowerment (to solve their local health
problems), these same community experiences also provide the milieu for the development of desirable students‘
attitudes and values towards social accountability to address health inequity at the ground level. Other values like
commitment, compassion, selflessness, teachability and humility are likewise captured and honed by the students.
The community engagement therefore becomes a bidirectional relationship where the students help in the transfor-mation of the community, and the community helps in the formation of the students.
Current DOH reports show that the communities where ADZU-SOM students are assigned, or where its
graduates are working, the health indices have improved as reflected in the health programs performance and the
local government‘s health scorecards. Anecdotal and qualitative data from community stakeholders concur with
these findings. Similarly, a community impact survey on Maternal Care showed that mothers in communities where
ADZU-SOM has students and graduates avail of health services extensively raging from 87%-97% utilization rate.
This report is a synthesis of the various health interventional projects of the students participation with the
community for the school year 2015-2016.
