Author: HONEY NIÑA R. CABREROS
Date: April 2016

Vehicular accidents ranked as the 5th and 7th leading causes of mortality and morbidity in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur, but despite this, the municipality remained to have no functional emergency response team. On preliminary interviews done to 100 residents of Mahayag, 82% of them report accidents directly to the police but of the 31 interviewed Mahayag Police, 61% has no previous first aid training. This research aimed to determine the effect of periodic (monthly) first aid training with corrective feedback to the knowledge, skills and retention of police officers pre and post intervention for three (3) months. This study followed an observational cohort design which included 17 police officers. The evaluation utilized a 15-item knowledge questionnaire and an 80-item skills’ checklist which were done before and immediately after the intervention, monthly before every refresher course for two months and one month after the last refresher course. The knowledge evaluations revealed significant improvement of mean scores from 7.94±2.04 in the pretest to 13.23 ±1.25 in the final test (p value 0.00). For the skills evaluation, the training has increased the number of respondents who were classified as “Excellent” from none of the respondents during pre-intervention evaluation to all 17 respondents by the second post-intervention evaluation, then consistently until the final evaluation. It can then be concluded in this study that periodic training with corrective feedback has a significant effect on the knowledge, skills and retention of police officers in terms of pre-hospital management of vehicular accidents.
