Author: ANGELICA A CLARIZ
Date: April 2016

With the goal of decreasing and ultimately zeroing maternal deaths in the country, national and local health programs have been implemented for this vision to materialize. Despite of the numerous programs adapted, unanticipated incidence of maternal deaths are persistent and are most common among communities were home deliveries are still happening. In order to determine local data on factors associated with facility based deliveries, a case-control study was conducted in two barangays (Upper Salug Daku and poblacion) in the Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. A total of 252 respondents were identified, 84 cases and 168 controls were recruited. The following variables were identified in the two groups: Demographic, Socio-economic, and Cultural factors. There were no factors pertaining to knowledge on pregnancy as well as health services related factors that came out to be significant. Adjusted odds ratios revealed five (5) significant factors associated with increased odds of exposure among mothers giving birth in health facilities and these were: 26 to 35 years old age group, those who are married, those who are college graduate as well as those who reach college level though not able to finish it, women with only one child, and finally with perception that medical staff in health facilities are respectful. On the other hand, there were 3 factors with decreased probability of exposure among mothers who gave birth in health facilities which include: 46 to 55 age group, with perception that home delivery means lesser expenses, and lastly with perception that home delivery is a good practice. It is recommended that future interventions should address factors that came out to be significant. Programs pertaining to the promotion of facility based delivery should focus more on populations exposed to factors which came out to have decreased odds of exposure among mothers who gave birth in health facilities. Moreover, the local health system has to come up with a strengthened and focused health education on the benefits of a facility based delivery on top of the dangers and risks of home deliveries. Women exposed to factors which were identified significant in terms of increased odds of exposure among mothers who opt for facility based delivery can be helpful advocators thus zero home based deliveries can be attained in both rural and urban barangays in the Municipality of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur.
