Date: July 2017

The number one cause of death among children aged 1 to 14 year olds are common injuries and most of these injuries occur within the school vicinity. These emergencies can range from minor cases such as bruises to major accidents resulting in bleeding, fractures, seizures or worst, loss of consciousness. Teachers are the main front liners in the school, they serve as second parents and nurses in the classroom. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine which mode of teaching (traditional lecture versus video assisted) is effective in teaching first aid knowledge and skills among elementary school teachers in five selected public schools in the Southern district of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. Teachers (n=51) were allocated to two modes of teaching ; video assisted (n=25) and lecture (n=26). Results showed improvements on the knowledge and skills of teachers in the video assisted group. However, there was no significant difference observed between the lecture and video assisted groups when compared overall at the end of the study. This study concludes neither of the two modes, separately were effective in teaching first aid knowledge and skills among the Elementary teachers in the selected public schools.
