The study determined the effect of occupational safety and health promotion on the knowledge and practices of construction workers on the safety in construction workplace in the Municipality of Sergio Osmeña, Sr., Zamboanga del Norte. The study used pre and post interventional design. The promotion was done through health education in the form of lecture and provision of tetanus toxoid. Thirty six respondents were recruited through convenience sampling. The baseline knowledge of the respondents regarding first aid for common medical emergencies, tetanus infection and prevention, and proper and safe material handling procedures were assessed using questionnaire prior to the intervention. Actual practices concerning material handling procedures were also assessed using an observational checklist prior to the intervention. Paired t-test was used to compare pre and post intervention knowledge results. Results showed significant improvement in their mean knowledge score from baseline with 17.86 to post-test 1 and 2 with 23.89 and 23.14 respectively (p<0.05). For the actual practices on material handling procedures of construction workers for masons, carpenters, painters and welders, frequency of correct practices was used to determine improvement. The majority (>50%) of the respondents for masons (n=26) showed significant improvement in the actual practices after the intervention. However, the carpenters, painters and welders (n≤4) showed an increasing trend in the frequency of correct practices (>50%). All of the 36 respondents (100%) were able to complete two doses of tetanus toxoid after the intervention. Based on the results, occupational safety and health promotion is an effective form of intervention in improving the knowledge and practices of construction workers specifically for masons (n=26) under the Municipal Engineering Office, Local Government Unit of Municipality of Sergio Osmeña, Sr.,Zamboanga del Norte, regarding safety in construction workplace.
