Acute malnutrition in the form of Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is mainly caused by inadequate nutritional intake and can ultimately lead to death. Thus, a locally-produced Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) was created that is easy to reproduce and community engaging. This is composed of vegetable oil, powdered milk, powdered sugar, peanut powder and Moringa oleifera powder. In this study, the effectiveness and acceptance rate of the locally-produced RUTF among children aged 6 months to 5 years old were determined. This study was done for 6 consecutive weeks with a total of 15 respondents. Their initial weight, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC )and nutritional status were measured and monitored weekly. Acceptance rate and positive feedback for the locally-produced RUTF among mothers were determined. There was a mean weight gain of 3 kg and mean MUAC increase of 2 cm after 6 weeks. The acceptance rate regarding the creation and consumption of the high-caloric paste was 100% and no negative feedbacks were elicited during the entire duration of the study. Positive feedbacks include increase in appetite, longer nap times and increased energy during physical activities. This study concludes that the locally-produced RUTF significantly increased the weight-for-age and MUAC of children 6 months to 5 years with moderate and severe acute malnutrition in barangays Kaangayan and Lower Sto. Nino in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur.
