LECTURE AS AN INTERVENTION TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UTILIZATION OF IODIZED SALT AMONG HOUSEHOLDS IN BARANGAY GOIN, LILOY ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE
Author: Fatima Rubyreth S. Tingkahan
Date: July 2017

With the increasing cases of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) in Zamboanga del Norte, which recently had the highest prevalence rate on the entire country, thus, it is important to address this issue at hand. One of municipalities in Zamboanga Del Norte is the Municipality of Liloy. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of lecture intervention on the knowledge and utilization of iodized salt among households in Barangay Goin, Liloy, Zamboanga Del Norte. A quasi-experimental study was done using a lecture derived from a previous similar study as an intervention. Results showed that there was an increase in knowledge of mothers/caretakers regarding iodized salt with a mean score of 4.74 before the intervention to 5.64 post intervention and a significant p value of <0.05. This study concludes that lecture intervention can increase the knowledge of mothers/caretakers in the barangay. However, although iodized salt utilization seems to have increased after the intervention, it might not be conclusive because the tool used is only a self-reported practice questionnaire and actual iodized salt in the household was not tested. The researcher recommends that the future researchers will measure the actual usage of iodized salt by testing the iodine content of the salt in each household before and after the intervention as to provide a conclusive data on iodized salt usage.
