MALE CONCEPT AND ACCEPTABILITY OF FAMILY PLANNING IN AN AREA WITH A HIGH CONTRACEPTIVE PREVALENCE RATE IN ZAMBOANGA CITY

This study aimed to determine the male concept and acceptability of FP in areas with high CPR in Zamboanga City. This employed a cross sectional descriptive study. The survey had 433 male respondents with age 17 to 58 residing in the barangays under Canelar Health District which has higher Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) of 47 percent compared to Zamboanga City’s CPR of 29 percent. Sixty seven percent are married while the rest in domestic partnership, 59 percent do not want to have children. One third believes that ideal spacing between pregnancies should be 2 years. Majority believe the ideal family size consist of 1 to 3 children, they know the different medical, natural and traditional methods. Health providers are sources of information, television the most common source of information. Eighty seven percent showed positive attitude on male methods in family planning particularly vasectomy. This positivity provides opportunities for Zamboanga City Health Office and policy makers to improve misconceptions on male-based family planning methods through appropriate health education.
